BRIEF HISTORY
As we prepare for our 42nd annual Easterval activities in Union Island, its is important that we look back at where we came from. Easter Festivities in Union Island began in 1966 and was organise mainly by the Selby Farmily who were Unionites based in Trinidad. The program then only included athletics, sailing boat and pumpkin wood boat racing, which took place in Ashton Harbour. The land activities were held at the Ashton Salt Pond where paticipant received prizes sponsored by Trini-Unionites.
As the event evolved the hosting venue for the festival shifted to the Clifton Harbour but was still a two days Event Festival, (Easter Saturday & Sunday). Groups such as The Raising Sun and ORSDER managed the festivities over the years and played their part in the surprising growth of the festival.
Organisation for Social Development and Educational Reform(ORSDER) was formed in the late 1980's by a group of young ambitious well educated men .
Today Committee Department Chairman Ken James was also a member of ORSDER.
Their impact was felt far and wide as they oversaw the feastival moving from a two day event to nine days which it is at presently.
It was ORSDER who spearheaded the inclusion of regional participation into the festival both sports or culture. Their main goal was to integrate the region through sports and culture. This was evident in 1989 when three Prime Ministers were present at the opening of the festival. Soon other community groups would come together to formed the Union Island Easterval Committee. This committee although members changed is still the organisers for the festival today.
